Development and Challenges of Electrically Selectable One-Way Clutches

This paper discusses new developments in the field of one-way clutches (OWC). These recent developments involve “Selectable OWC (SOWC)” actuating both hydraulically as well as electrically. The primary focus of this paper is a low-current consuming Electrical SOWC (eSOWC) used in hybrid transmission being designed and developed at Ford Motor Company. Other SOWCs currently being utilized across different applications at Ford are also discussed. Clutching devices represent significant cost, weight, size and drag-loss in automatic transmissions. However, implementation of SOWCs offers the potential to reduce transmission cost, size, weight, and spin loss; eSOWCs may also improve shift quality, reduce shift times, improve shift consistency and reduce OWC-related NVH. In Hybrid applications the electric motor(s) and SOWC create a system that is analogous to a manual transmission synchronizer.

Predictive Transmission Shift Schedule for Improving Fuel Economy and Drivability Using Electronic Horizon

This paper proposes an approach that uses the road preview data to optimize a shift schedule for a vehicle equipped with an automatic transmission. The road preview is inferred here from the so-called electronic horizon of a digital map that includes road attributes such as road grade, curvature, segment speed limit, functional class, etc. The optimized shift schedule selects the gear ratio whose optimization is conducted through applying a hybrid model predictive control method to the powertrain system, which is modelled as the multiple plants associated with multiple gears together with engine models. The goal of this optimization of shift schedule includes improving real world fuel economy and drivability. The real-world fuel economy gains using the proposed approach are achieved through optimizing gear ratio w.r.t. the road grade variations of the road ahead.

Shudder Durability of a Wet Launch Clutch Part II - Durability Study

Under the initiative of the United States Council for Automotive Research LLC (USCAR§) Transmission Working Group, a collaborative effort was made with LuK USA LLC to study the influence of the friction interface parameters on the shudder durability of a wet launch clutch. Clutch configurations with different combinations of four friction materials (A, B, C and D), three groove patterns (waffle, radial and waffle-parallel) and two separator plate conditions (nitrided and non-nitrided) were considered. Durability testing consisted of a test profile, with 110 kJ energy per test cycle, developed earlier in this project. Materials A, B and C with nitrided separator plates reached the end of test criteria for the torque gradient and showed shudder. Materials B and C were more wear resistant as compared to materials A and D. The loss of friction coefficient (μ) was lower for materials B, C and D as compared to material A.

Life Cycle Assessment of a Transmission Case: Magnesium vs. Aluminum

This paper describes a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) done to evaluate the relative environmental performance of magnesium (Mg) and aluminum (Al) automatic transmission cases. Magnesium is considered a lighter weight substitute for aluminum in this application. Light weighting of vehicles increases fuel economy and is an important vehicle design metric. The objective of this LCA is to quantify energy and other environmental trade-offs associated with each alternative for material production, manufacturing, use, and end-of-life management stages. Key features of the inventory modeling and the data collection and analysis methods are included in this paper along with life cycle inventory profiles of aluminum and magnesium alternatives. The life cycle inventory (LCI) was interpreted using a set of environmental metrics and areas needing further research were identified. A qualitative cost assessment was done in conjunction with this LCA to highlight potential cost drivers.
